Chakra (cakra in Sanskrit) means wheel or circle and refers to the 7 energy points located in the body. They act like spinning wheels of energy radiating from within. They run from the base of the spine up to the top of the head and correspond to areas, organs and nerves in our physical body that affect our emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
Chakra originated in India between 1500 and 500 BC. However, there are many types of Chakra dating back through the centuries, so I will concentrate on the western theories and their meanings.
Each of the 7 Chakra has a corresponding colour and symbol which influence our bodies. Each Chakra serves a different purpose in five different ways through our emotional, energetic, physical, psychological and spiritual responses. It is thought that when our Chakras are out of balance then mental and physical problems can occur.

The following is a basic summary of the 7 Chakras, their meanings and how to unblock the Chakra:

The Root Chakra – Red Colour and the grounding needed to our Earth. The First Chakra. First Physical Chakra.

The Root Chakra defines our relationship and grounding with the Earth. It is our flight or fight response Chakra when we sense danger in our lives. It also is where we combine our logic, realistic thinking and find order in our lives. It influences our creativity, passion, sexuality and the basic need survival instincts.
When the above do not meet our expectations (physical or emotional), a lack of trust can develop that can follow us into adulthood and cause an imbalance in our Root Chakra.

Feelings of being fearful, resistant to change, lacking security in relationships, anxiety and being very materialistic are signs of Root Chakra problem. As the Root Chakra is about feeling grounded start by going for a walk to open yourself to nature. Swim in the ocean and push the energy through to your feet to open this chakra. Use essential oils made of wood scents to ground yourself. Root Chakra healing crystals are Ruby Quartz, Obsidian, Garnet and Red Jasper.

The Sacral Chakra – Orange Colour and is the young child within. The Second Chakra. Second Physical Chakra.

The Sacral Chakra is about your energy centre and how you show self- expression. It deals with your sexuality, creativity and emotional expression. As a child you were able to be the real you, free and joyous. But if you now have issues with boundaries, relationship troubles or an inability to form deep connections with people it is like to be an issue within your Sacral Chakra. It also influences our desires and our reproductive functions amongst other things.

To balance your Sacral Chakra try eating orange foods like carrot, mangoes and oranges. Listen to Sound Therapy music at 288HZ to boost healing. Crystals for Sacral healing are Moonstone, Carnelian, Peach Adventurine and Honey Calcite.

The Solar Plexus Cakra – Yellow Colour and your teenage years. The Third Chakra. Third Physical Chakra.

The Solar Plexus Chakra or navel chakra is known as holding your personal power. It connects to your self-esteem, life goals, desires and intentions. It also is a storage place for your intellect and ego.

This Chakra is the one most likely to fall out of alignment. This usually happens during the teenage years because that is when we feel or start to feel not good enough. If you struggle with rejection, criticism, self esteem issues, addiction or lack of self-control then you probably also suffer from gut and digestive issues. It also affects your mental health as the gut system is thought to be like our second brain. It can also become misaligned due to always helping others instead of yourself.

Using affirmations of positivity can boost self esteem and bring back good feelings. “I am perfect just as I am”. Learning to say no instead of yes and doing things that make you happy can unblack this Chakra. Also doing a range of exercises like Pilates or Yoga will also bring a feeling of contentment back to your Solar Plexus. The crystals Tiger Eye, Citrine and Amber will clear this Chakra.

The Heart Chakra – Green Colour and the keeper of the Heart. The Fourth Chakra. The Fourth Physical Chakra.

We must always make sure that our heart is open. So why is it we chose to do the opposite? Whether it is because of rejection, abandonment, losing a loved one it is all the same. The outcome is always heartbreak. It causes us to shut ourselves off to others and stay unforgiving by blocking everyone and everything out vowing never to repeat the same mistake again. But all it does is cause a blockage in the Heart Chakra and lead to unhappiness and unfulfillment.

The only way to unblock your fourth Chakra is to release the energy you have stored up that is blocking your flow and keeping love out of your life. The old saying to forgive and forget is hard to put into practice but it is the only way to move forward and love again. Wearing the colour green or getting back to nature is also a good way to open your Heart Chakra. Immerse yourself in green colours and hold on to green crystals like Malachite, Green Adventurine or Peridot. Wear these gems on your body to start to feel whole again.

The Throat Chakra – Blue Colour and the holder of communication. The Fifth Chakra. The First Spiritual Chakra.

The Throat Chakra is known as the communication centre and deals with you speaking your truth and expressing your true intentions. When you are speaking to others and telling them how you feel the energy is flowing freely. Communicating to others through singing and listening in order to respond in kind are all important to the Throat Chakra. It is also the Chakra close to the area where ‘karma’ is created.

It is important to make sure all thoughts, spoken words and our actions are aligned with what we believe to be honest and true, or a blockage will occur. If you have issues in your romantic relationships, it is probably because you are not speaking your truth and you will carry this into any future relationships. By staying true to yourself you can take your relationships to a new level of contentment. Aquamarine Quartz, Turquoise Quartz and Tanzanite are beautiful crystal healing gems for this Chakra.

The Third Eye Chakra – Indigo Colour and holder of the ‘sixth sense’. The Sixth Chakra. The Second Spiritual Chakra.

The Third Eye Chakra is also the sixth sense chakra. It is that feeling you can’t quite put your finger on that tells you something that turns out to be correct. When this Chakra is open you make all the right decisions and know exactly what to do in any circumstance. It is the connection to your soul and must be trusted in order to tap into your psychic abilities.

When your Third Eye Chakra is working overtime, you lack good judgement, cannot focus and want to live in a fantasy world in your mind. When it is underactive you will be closed off to new ideas and adventures, be reliant on others for decision making or feel disconnected to others. It is time to try something new! Be creative and find an activity that brings out your imagination again. Visual the colour indigo while meditating. Try using Amethyst, Labradorite and Lapis Lazuli Crystals to open the Third Eye Chakra.

The Crown Chakra – Violet Colour and links you to the universe. The Seventh Chakra. The Third Spiritual Chakra.

The Crown Chakra rests above your head like a queen’s crown. It holds the power of the universe and brings out your awareness powers. It is where you ask for guidance from your spirit guides.

Where the Root Chakra provides grounding, the Crown Charka connects us to the heavens above. To grow spiritually your seventh chakra must function normally. You cannot be bogged down by negative thoughts and emotions or have egotistical desires. The Chakras work from the bottom to the top so if you are not taking care of your body, unable to set and maintain goals or lack direction in your life it is time to open your Crown Charka.
To open your Crown Chakra, write your dreams down to interpret again later or learn about the ‘Law of Attraction’ to communicate what it is you genuinely want in your life. The Crown Chakra works best with crystals Sapphire, Selenite, Quartz and Rainbow Moonstone.
